Choosing The Right Motor Control Strategy for Mobile Equipment Applications

September 16, 2026

When designing mobile equipment, OEM engineers have four primary options for motor and actuator control: mechanical contactors, solid-state switches, H-bridge modules, and networked controllers. The choice between them directly impacts the system’s speed control capabilities, long-term durability, and diagnostic depth. It’s crucial to know what type of application it is used for and how it fits into your application.

Some common motor control approaches for OEMs vary from simple electromechanical switching to more advanced digital algorithms. Depending on your motor and application type, the H-bridge module would be a possible fit for your application needs.

What is an H-Bridge Module?

An H-bridge is a simple electronic circuit with four switches, either transistors or metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). Switches are in H-shape to control the direction of current flow. It provides a full PWM bidirectional control that is durable and best fit suited for steering, positioning and reversing actuators.

H-Bridge Circuit Main Applications

The J1939 H-bridge offers internal control in many applications. These are some of the most common applications:

    • DC Motor Control: An H-bridge is the leading method for controlling both the speed and direction of DC motors. This versatile technology powers everything from electric vehicles and industrial machinery to everyday household appliances and toys.
    • Stepper Motor Control: Precision machinery like CNC machines and 3D printers rely on stepper motors. An H-bridge delivers precise motor direction and speed control in these motors.
  • Inverter: H-bridge functions as the main circuit inside power inverters that rapidly switch DC voltage polarity to generate an AC waveform. Mostly used in electric vehicles, solar power systems, uninterrupted power supply (UPS).

The H-bridge provides many advantages that includes direction control, speed control efficiency and precision across many areas of application needs.
